Community Gallery: Food on Film
2 15 Share TweetThere's probably only a small number among us who can say that they haven't had the urge to photograph their food. We do it for many different reasons: because of a sense of pride in our own cooking, joy at discovering a new cuisine, to remember a moment, or simply, because of an inner satisfaction of its colors and textures.
In this community gallery, we celebrate the colorful and appetizing food photos shared by our community members on their LomoHomes. Never mind the "imperfections", we know they were delicious!
These images of food on film (found while browsing LomoHomes and newly-uploaded photos), tell us which kinds of foods are prevalent in specific countries, and what someone had for lunch on a certain day, several years ago.
Something about these food photos somehow feels nostalgic. They can prompt us to wonder what kind of occasion was being celebrated, and why the photographer wanted to remember this meal.
Food might sometimes be considered an uninteresting subject (especially in our fast-paced social media culture where many things can be shared conveniently), but it has been integral to our understanding of history and human behaviour, too.
Food art which remains prevalent across cultures help us figure out what kind of food people were eating at a specific point in history. It tells us which resources were available in different areas and cultures, especially among different social classes. Works of art such as paintings, frescoes, sculptures and other decorative arts, use food as subjects to reflect reality, or even impart ideological statements.
It's no wonder that many of our community members also find food as interesting subjects to photograph. Just looking at this community gallery shows us just how diverse food culture really is. Each dish captured on film, whether homecooked, ordered in a restaurant or in food stalls, appears appetizing enough to pique our curiosity.
Taking the photo on film also seems like a sentimental act. We know how satisfying the click of a shutter is and the process of waiting for rolls to be developed. It must've been satisfying to see these photos appear and remember once again the meals, or sights and smells that we enjoyed and the people we were with.
