The first large solo exhibition in Italy by Iranian artist Shirin Neshat, who through her film and photographic works explores the identity representations of feminine and masculine in her culture. In the tormented photographs of women, with their faces marked by Farsi calligraphy or wearing the hijab and holding guns, the woman’s gaze becomes a powerful and dangerous communication tool. Concepts such as martyrdom, the space of exile and matters of identity are examined through poetry and calligraphy. In her practice, the artist uses poetic imagery to deal with the themes of gender and society, the individual and the community and the dialectical relationship between past and present, through the lens of her experiences of belonging and exile. Binia Bill (1904–1988) turned to photography with ambition and confidence. After training as a concert cellist, she attended the photography class given by Lucia Moholy at Berlin’s Itten School in 1930 and worked as a freelance photographer when back in Zurich. In 1931, she married the architect and artist Max Bill. To earn a living, the couple worked together on advertising commissions, for which she produced the images while he designed the typography and layout. In the years that followed, Binia Bill created a remarkable photographic oeuvre: Her portraits and still lifes are characterised by a clear visual language that is related to the aesthetics of the ‘Neues Sehen’ movement. Binia Bill’s interest in perspectives and surfaces, in playing with light and shadow, was combined with a very distinct sensitivity though, which influenced her view of objects, plants, animals and people.

“Heim und Leben” was an illustrated magazine for the general public with a high proportion of images, which offered a platform for important positions in Swiss reportage photography. The magazine’s extensive image archive, which was published by CJ Bucher-Verlag, came under the responsibility of the Museum im Bellpark after the publisher was dissolved. With the support of Memoriav, the association for the preservation of audiovisual cultural assets, the photo collection was secured and inventoried. After completing this work, the museum in Bellpark is now offering an in-depth look at the remarkable press archive, which documents social change in the period from 1930 to 1960. The presentation focuses on those photographers who shaped the profile of the popular magazine.
