As marvelous and striking natural structures, volcanoes have long been subjects of scientific research and many artistic works. Images of volcanoes can evoke a sense of fear and awe. In this community gallery, we've compiled a few photos of volcanoes on film shared by our community members.

Some of the most terrifying natural disasters we've ever experienced are undoubtedly related to volcanoes. The fact that some of these volcanoes were thought to be dormant before their powerful eruptions proves how dangerous and damaging these wonders can be.

For example, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy which destroyed Pompeii in 79 AD, the Mt. Tambora and Krakatoa eruptions in Indonesia in 1815 and 1883 respectively, or in more recent times the Mount Pelée eruption in the Caribbean in 1902, and the 1991 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines, were devastating enough to change landscapes and affect the economies of cities and even nearby countries and continents.

As fascinating subjects, volcanoes have also captivated the attention of artists such as film photographers eager to capture them. A sense of awe adds to the fascination for these subjects, as well as a certain level of respect and admiration for the natural world and our complex yet crucial ties to it.

Wondering about these geological structures can inspire us to travel to places and witness their beauty firsthand. In the Lomography Online Magazine, we've interviewed photographers on their personal experience with volcanoes such as Guido Rocatti’s (@ruido) long exposure of Volcán de Fuego and Justino Blake’s photos of Lombok including its volcanoes with the Lomography Redscale Film.

Whether Mount Etna in Italy, Pacaya Volcano in Guatemala, or Mount Aso in Japan, these images taken by our community members around the world allow us glimpses of these revered structures and why they're worth capturing on film.

We'd like to thank our adventurous community members for sharing their images of volcanoes on film!
