Newcomer of the Week: Julie Jarosz (@sugarmaplewings)

A photograph-worthy moment can be found almost everywhere if one pays careful attention to the extraordinary hidden in seemingly mundane scenes. The enchanting work of France-based photography student Julie Jarosz (@sugarmaplewings) is an example of that. Through her masterful use of colors and double exposure, she turns her day-to-day experiences into alluring images that strike a balance between dreams and reality.

Please tell us something about yourself and what you do.

I am 22 and I live in France. I decided to study photography at a fine art school in Brussels for the next three years. Before that, I studied psychology for three years. I started photography five years ago when I bought my first digital camera. I've been shooting analogue for five months now but still shoot digital. Both are quite different and I love to experiment a lot.

How did you find the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

I found the Lomography Community when I was looking for a special film that I can use for a special trip. I bought the LomoChrome Purple to bring to Iceland. Then, I thought that it could be a good thing to join the Community and share my work. Plus, I find it very useful to discover new artists.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

I think the last one, "Don't worry about any rules". I don't really like rules, to be honest. Yet I apply the "Take your camera everywhere you go" in my everyday life, without even being aware of it.

In this digital age, why do you still shoot film?

I find film photography as a completely different way of interpreting and expressing things. It is a lot more personal, as YOU are in the process of creating from the very beginning until that moment when you hold your pictures in your hands. It takes time, and so the value of the creation grows bigger. It really changed the vision I had for photography. And oh how I love grainy pictures!

Your favorite analogue camera as of the moment? Why?

The only one I had until recently, my Canon AE-1. It's very easy to use and perfect for beginners in film photography. The quality is good and the camera itself has the most perfect look!

What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?

It's not a camera but the Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens!

Any song, book, or movie you live by?

I love way too many songs so it's actually impossible for me to choose only one, but music has a very special place in my heart for sure, especially psychedelic/experimental. The book(s) that really echoes to my soul might be The Lord of the Ring. As for a movie, I would say The Darjeeling Limited by Wes Anderson.

Share your current favorite Lomograph, could be yours or a friend’s. Why?

Photo by Edie Sunday. From Exposure Therapy - An Interview with Edie Sunday.

My all-time favourite photo by Edie Sunday. I can't really answer why — it's all about the feelings this photograph brings to me. It speaks to my heart.

Any Community member you look up to? If so, why him or her?

Not really. I don't know many people here yet.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

I really want to discover artists and be inspired to keep on shooting. I want to learn via others and their work and find what really speaks to my soul. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us and welcome to the Lomography Community, Julie!
