Event Recap: The Shoot Ireland Lomowalk in Blessington
1 3 Share TweetBack in November we lent some Diana F+ and LomoApparat cameras, along with some LomoChrome Purple film to The Shoot Ireland for a special Lomowalk in Blessington, a small town on the River Liffey in County Wicklow. In this interview, we talked to Gavin, the organiser of the event about Ireland's growing analogue community and he shared some of the photo results from the day, including a video he made of the Lomowalk with interviews from some of the participants.
Hi The Shoot Ireland. Please tell us a bit about your group?
Hi everyone, Gavin here, the founder of The Shoot Ireland. We are a community of models and photographers in Ireland. We would network and collaborate together on projects to help build up each others portfolios and skills.
We hold monthly events with different themes, locations and networking opportunities. Stylists, makeup artists, videographers, fashion designers etc. are also welcome to attend the events and to also join the community.
Why did you choose to organise this Lomowalk with your community?
Over the past few months we've held events in more suburban and city landscapes so we wanted to bring the community to a more remote scenic landscape and Blessington in county Wicklow was a very suitable location with it's beautiful lakes with the surrounding forest.
How did you find shooting with the different cameras?
Some of the photographers that attended this Lomowalk have never shot film before, so both the Diana F+ and LomoApparat were great entry cameras. We taught them how to load and shoot with the manual settings and it was a new fresh challenge and experience.
How is the film community in Ireland and what are the general attitudes to analogue photography?
The film photography community is very strong in Ireland as there are many communities such as Ireland Analog, Analog Photographers Limerick, 32 Exposures, and Cork Film Friends that have been organising film photography related events. We also did a collaboration and networking event with Ireland Analog in November where we had guest speakers and networking opportunities for photographers in Ireland. It was a great success and insightful event. In Ireland we have reliable labs such as John Gunn Camera Shop in Dublin and DevMyFilm in Cork, where you can get all your color or black and white film developed and scanned. They both also have various amounts of film stocks, photography equipment, darkroom chemicals etc available to purchase as well as thephotoshop.ie. Also, many galleries and studios would support film photography and hold exhibitions, workshops, and festivals across Ireland.
What's coming up next for you in 2025?
Our events are very in demand, so we are going to continue hosting one main event per month, but we are also going to add, throughout the year, a second smaller event every few months. In 2024, we held some events in different counties outside of Dublin so we are looking to continue to expand on that. Some examples of the events will be - Community photoshoots, workshops, photowalks, exhibitions, portfolio teaching, studio events, and networking opportunities etc.
To stay up to date with The Shoot Ireland you can follow them on Instagram or via their website. Thanks also to Niccolo Turetta, model and contributor Toto Okafor and all the other participants who attended the walk.
