Lomo'Instant Wide Amigo Alfredo Buonanno

Alfredo Buonanno is a photographer who loves everything retro. When his friend Sergio showed him the Lomo’Instant Wide Central Park, Alfredo fell in love with the instant camera, instantly— and it was the beginning of a beautiful new story. He recently took lovely, retro-style pictures with the Lomo’Instant Wide with the model Viktoriya Tori as his muse.

Hi Alfredo! Please introduce yourself to the Lomo Community.

Hi everybody, I’m Alfredo, I was born in the middle ’80s, and maybe that’s why I love so much “being retro.” I did start to deal with cameras and filming as well in the summer of ’98 when I was 14 in my uncle’s photography lab. Now I’m a freelance photographer and videographer working mostly in events and music.

What was your first impression of the Lomo’Instant Wide?

My friend Sergio, from fotoema.it in Naples, showed me the Lomo’Instant Wide Central Park two days before my trip to Paris. I must say it was absolutely love at first sight or it’s better to say at first shoot! I usually love to travel with a film camera (LC-A and Lubitel 166B from my Lomography collection and a Canon AE-1 from my vintage reflex archive), but this time I decide to take only this new device with me in France.

Please tell us about your experience shooting with it. Did you encounter any challenges?

Shooting with my new Lomo’Instant Wide Central Park was amazing from the first shoot! (the black sheet too, I was so excited that I forgotten it). No challenges encountered, I’m a polaroid collector too (I own about 40 instant cameras), I love shooting instant pictures. They are so powerful to give back emotion in an unaffected and unchangeable way.

Please tell us about the photos you took.

I took some photos in Paris, experimenting with multi-exposure, wide angle lens and long-exposure. I felt so free to express myself with no constraints regarding the subject and at the same time I could get it immediately in my hands! Great! When I was back home, I was so excited that I organized a vintage shoot at Millesimé Vintage to fully explore every feature of this camera.

I must say thank you to the model: Viktoriya Tori, Millesimé for the styling and location, Elena Crocco Make-up artist, Lello Fiore for the hair styling. We called it “You are so retro.” I plugged my flash trigger to the PC-sync of the camera, and inspired by the colored filter for the flash in the box of the Lomo’Instant Wide, I used two external flash colored in red and blue to give picture more emphasis.

Which one is your favorite? Why?

I always like to say that the picture I like more is the one I have not taken yet; but if have to choose among these, I must say the one with the Tour Eiffel and the multi-exposure of the light entering in camera with the cap on. It seems to see the Tour Eiffel in a glass ball.

What is your favorite feature of the Lomo’Instant Wide?

My favorite feature of the Lomo’Instant Wide is the way it is unique! In my opinion wide angle lens, multiexposure and PC-sync are so fantastic feature for an instant camera.

For what photo opportunities would you recommend it?

I’d recommend this camera to everyone wants to explore a new way to shoot, to be creative with just one limit: there’s no way to post-produce what you shoot! And for me this is the best limit a camera should have.

What advice would you give to someone who will be using it for the first time?

To someone who will be using the Lomo’Instant Wide for the first time, I can suggest to learn from the way you have to shoot with this camera, how to be more selective on your photographic works, and at the same time to feel free to think without limits on what and how to shoot. It would be amusing to realize everything with it.
