shared by lakandula on 2011-11-26Higantes Festival is an annual parade of giant paper maches along the many streets of Angono every 23rd of November honoring the patron saint San Clemente. The folk tradition has its roots during the Spanish colonial times when Angono was a hacienda and the local tillers were protesting the abuses perpetrated by their landlords. That is why the effigies are made huge with hands to the waist. While the original frame was made of bamboo, current practice now also uses light weight metal frame. The parade is characterized by the unique dance steps of the parehadoras or young girls holding small paddles and wearing native bakya (wooden slippers) and water dousing specially along the parade route. Took these shots against bokehs during my recent third time documenting this interesting community ritual. Drenched my film in coke prior to developing.
