A Photographer’s Lifestyle Guide to Vienna, Austria

Vienna is one of those cities that totally lives up to the hype. It’s got all the grand architecture and royal history you’d expect – think palaces, opera houses, and dreamy cafés straight out of a movie. But it’s also super fresh and creative, with a buzzing art scene, cool neighborhoods, and music everywhere – from Mozart to techno. Grab a slice of Sachertorte, wander through quirky museums or vintage shops, and catch a concert in a golden hall or a tucked-away bar. Vienna is where classic meets cool, and it’s always a good time.

Naschmarkt in Vienna is always a treat to visit with the rows of open stalls selling food to take away, snacks to eat, and full sit-down meals. All under the roofs of the small stalls that have been in this place for over a 100 years. Visit on a weekend to see the Flea Market. A stroll through the vineyards of Nussberg always lifts the spirits of the Viennese. There is a unique view of the city, and wine from the best growers in favorite wine taverns. Once you get there, you’ll never want to leave. But nothing lasts forever – and everyone finds their way back to the city eventually. Museums Quartier
The Museumsquartier is an area of 9 hectares in the 7th district of the city of Vienna, Austria. The MQ is home to a range of installations from large art museums like the Leopold Museum (featuring artists such as Egon Schiele, Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, and Richard Gerstl) and the MUMOK (Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation Vienna) to contemporary exhibition spaces like the Kunsthalle Wien and festivals like the Wiener Festwochen, an annual summer event that is headquartered in the MuseumsQuartier Wien.

Secession
The Secession Building is a contemporary art exhibition hall. It was completed in 1898 by Joseph Maria Olbrich as an architectural manifesto for the Vienna Secession, a group of rebel artists that seceded from the long-established fine art institution.

Foto Arsenal Wien
FOTO ARSENAL WIEN is the new exhibition space for photography and lens-based media in Austria. Since 2023, they have been responsible for the FOTO WIEN festival, and starting in 2025, they will co-host the Vienna Digital Cultures festival together with Kunsthalle Wien.

MAK
The MAK – Museum of Applied Arts is an arts and crafts museum located at Stubenring 5 in Vienna's 1st district Innere Stadt. Besides its traditional orientation towards arts, crafts and design, the museum especially focuses on architecture and contemporary art. Spot the Lomo LC-A in their product design collection!

WestLicht
A museum of cameras and photography, with 40,000 photos and daguerreotypes, plus temporary exhibitions.

Albertina
The Albertina is a museum in the Innere Stadt of Vienna, Austria. It houses one of the largest and most important print rooms in the world with approximately 65,000 drawings and 1 million old master prints, as well as more modern graphic works, photographs and architectural drawings.

Street Photography & Lomography Film Community Scene in Vienna

The wealth of knowledge and experience that comes from the Lomography Community is simply unrivaled. In this section we share some of our community's top-tips about the city of Vienna. This includes their favorite locations for visiting and photographing, and some invaluable tips on shooting in analogue. We will also showcase some of our most inspiring Vienna-based LomoHomes and Partners.

Neubau district
The home of the Lomography HQ and our friendly LomoLAB team. If you are on the hunt for second-hand analogue cameras, start at Westbahnstrasse, a quiet but lovely street with plenty of photography stores. Go all the way down and stop at Neubaugasse, probably the most artsy street with many independent design and concept stores.

Karlsplatz Stadtbahn Station
Karlsplatz Stadtbahn Station is a former station of the Viennese Stadtbahn. The buildings above ground on Karlsplatz are a well-known example of Jugendstil architecture.

Prater
A large park with old-time amusements, including a landmark giant wheel dating from 1897. We recommend this spot to practice your long exposure technique.

Schottenring Underground Station
Schottenring is a station on U2 and U4 of the Vienna U-Bahn. It is located under the Donaukanal, in the border between the Innere Stadt and Leopoldstadt districts. It was a huge escalator perfect for street and underground shoots.

Donaukanal
A pedestrian zone next to the river Donaukanal. Home to bars, restaurants, cyclists, walkers, artists (and beavers). It's a hotspot for Vienna’s younger generations and is also well-known for graffiti, with its walls serving as a large, public canvas for various street artists. The area, particularly the stretch between Augartenbrücke and Franzensbrücke, is covered with graffiti, murals, and messages, making it a vibrant part of Vienna's urban landscape.

WU
The Vienna University of Economics and Business is a public research university. But why do we recommend it? Its architecture and interior design is perfect to give your shots a futuristic touch.

Former post office 1st district
An old building in the Vienna style. Cool to capture the old style-architecture of the city.

Spittelau
Municipal incinerators rarely top lists of architectural highlights. Ah, but this is Vienna, and they do things differently here. Consider, for example, the Spittelau incinerator with its remarkable design by Friedensreich Hundertwasser.

Opera
The Vienna State Opera is a historic opera house and company. The 1,709-seat Renaissance Revival venue was the first major building on the Vienna Ring Road.

Schmetterlinghaus
An art nouveau palm house, home to hundreds of butterflies housed in a tropical rainforest setting.

Naschmarkt
Naschmarkt in Vienna is always a treat to visit with the rows of open stalls selling food to take away, snacks to eat, and full sit-down meals. All under the roofs of the small stalls that have been in this place for over a 100 years. Visit on a weekend to see the Flea Market, we never leave the street empty-handed even if we go there just for a look!

Vienna vineyard
Vienna is the only metropolis that grows enough wine within its city limits to make it worth mentioning. Wine growing has a long tradition in Vienna. Nowadays, the city presents itself with a lively wine scene. Check out the Heuriger in the district 1210 - Kellergasse and in 1190 at Nussberg.

FRAME[O]UT – Open-air Cinema in the MQ Vienna

The FRAME[O]UT open-air film festival 2024 edition will take place every Friday and Saturday from July 12th to August 31st in the MuseumsQuartier, Vienna, Austria (free admission). The motto of the festival this year is “GARDEN”. Gardens are not just physical places; they reflect identities, dreams, and visions. They are deeply rooted in culture and demonstrate our connection to nature. In times of climate crisis, threatened biodiversity, and social injustice, Frameout 2024 transforms the GARDEN into a venue for change and familiar garden metaphors are reinterpreted through cinematic perspectives. In short film programs, we encounter talking plants, a giant asparagus, and secret gardens expressing fantasies and desires.
