In this edition of Around the World in Analogue French film photographer and osteologist La Fille Renne (@lafilledeer) talks about a trip to the Faroe Islands with their partner. They tell us about the magical places they went to, projects they've working on which raise awareness on the impacts of the climate crisis on these areas, and more.

I visited the Faroe archipelago in August 2023. I stayed in the Skálafjørður fjord and was able to tour most of the archipelago's islands: Eysturoy, Streymoy, Vágar, Borðoy, Viðoy, Kunoy, Sandoy and Suðuroy.

I'm passionate about the Arctic and sub-Arctic areas, and the landscapes and biocenoses that emerge from them. I am currently working on two projects related to these regions.

The Arctic Project is a series of repeated trips to polar and subpolar climate regions since 2017. These are extremely fragile areas where the impacts of the current climate crisis are particularly visible, whether in terms of resources, landscapes or biodiversity, so I'm trying to highlight them with this photographic project. You can find two interviews on Lomography about previous trips to Lapland and Lofoten.

The second project is entitled Chasing whales and it’s about the relationship between cetaceans and humans. I'm fascinated by the idea that the ancestors of today's populations hunted these giants of the seas, without today's technology, driven by a lack of resources.

Today, these subsistence practices have given rise to cultures where whales are used as emblems, for example, or are still hunted as a matter of tradition. Driven by my training as an archaeozoologist, I document these practices and the presence of these species during my travels, always on film. I'm currently making a short film on the subject.

That's why I chose to visit the Faroe Islands with my partner. I also took the opportunity to shoot (on Lomography film) for my short film.

It was a magical trip, punctuated by moments and places that left a deep impression on me. Almost all the landscapes are impressive (the Múlafossur Waterfall is particularly beautiful), whatever the weather, and I really like the traditional buildings.

For example, we visited two abandoned whaling stations, we saw whale artifacts all over the archipelago, a wall on a beach whose base is made of ten whale skulls planted in the sand, etc. We also saw seals and beaked whales swimming.

The trip was also an opportunity to meet photographer Ella Morton (who was also interviewed in the magazine. )

In the end, this place left me with a similar impression to other sparsely populated places I've visited in Scandinavia. But I really liked this archipelago, the solitude you find there, while always having the ocean in sight.

LomoChrome Purple has long been my favorite film. It always follows me on my trips up north. I'm very, very fond of the dreamlike aspect it gives to my work, transforming these great green natural spaces into purple. I'm always delighted with the results I get with it. I'm also using it in the short film I'm working on and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

The archipelago is a beautiful place, but its balance is fragile: it's very important to try to be discreet. In short, don't disturb living species and don't leave garbage behind. You also need to be careful: the weather and certain hiking trails can make an outing quite dangerous. And enjoy!
