I've visited Bali every year since I was a child. Bali has always been one of my favorite places to visit. When I was little, all I did was play at the beach and visit waterparks. But lately, I've been going to Bali to participate in annual running events and also for sightseeing. So, going to Bali has become my annual must-do agenda.
I personally prefer to visit Bali during the mid-year (around June-August) because it's winter in Australia, making the weather in Bali cooler. Additionally, during this time, there's rarely any rain, making it the best time to experience great sunsets.
Since I come to Bali for running, that's one of my must-do activities. So, a few days before the race, I prepare myself with morning tapering, followed by carb-loading (I prefer pasta).
After the running event, I visit various beaches like Canggu, Pererenan, or Seminyak. These areas are tourist-packed and have a great nightlife. If I want to connect more with nature, I go to Ubud or Kintamani, where you can experience serenity and nature all around you.
Another thing I love to do is eat. Bali has many unique dining places and is known for having some restaurants with Michelin stars. I also enjoy watching sunsets by the beach while sipping on cocktails or chilled beers.
One of my most interesting and unforgettable moments was being chased by a dog when I was little. It happened at Sukowati Market many years ago. Since then, I've never been a dog person (but I do have a corgi at home). Beware of dogs that are often found on the streets in Bali.
Another unforgettable experience is when I fell from a 2-meter height in the middle of the sea while riding the flying fish. My chest felt tight, and breathing became difficult. Despite that, I still love engaging in water sports and would suggest you give it a try.
Those are two of the moments I will never forget about Bali.
Bali stands out for its unique blend of vibrant culture, lush landscapes, and spiritual atmosphere. The island offers diverse experiences, from stunning beaches to lush rice terraces and traditional ceremonies, making it a distinctive destination compared to many others.
You can also find great arts and designs with local touches. For me, the warm hospitality of the locals and their dedication to maintaining traditions contribute to Bali's distinct appeal.
My suggestions: capture Bali's diverse beauty by exploring various locations, from iconic temples like Tanah Lot to the lush landscapes of Tegallalang rice terraces. Embrace the golden hours for soft, warm light during sunrise and sunset. Engage with locals to add authentic cultural elements to your shots, and consider attending traditional ceremonies for unique photo opportunities.
Be respectful of sacred sites and local customs, and immerse yourself in the vibrant markets for colorful street photography. Lastly, don't forget to venture off the beaten path to discover hidden gems beyond the well-known tourist spots!
