Following the Melodies & Blues: Marc Jarabe with the New Petzval 58

After sharing his fun and energetic oeuvre with the moving image from a feature with Lomography Magazine, cinematographer and artist Marc Jarabe is back to share his freshly-captured photographs with Lomography's New Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens during a cool and casual night roaming around the streets of Vienna.

Hello, Marc! Welcome back to Lomography! We heard that you've shot some photos with the New Petzval 58. What do you think of the lens in general?

First of all, thanks! I had the chance to work with the Petzval 58 for a few days and it was fun. The lens has a solid, heavy and well-made construction. Also, it's a real eye-candy! With this lens on your camera, people look at you and want to know what this lens is about. I found its old school look really awesome. I think it's great for portraits in every situation, but I would also use it for landscape photography. So I think, that the 58mm is very versatile – in its use and handling. In short: It’s a very artistic and fun gadget for every day.

Where and with what camera did you shoot these photos?

I took the lens on a video shoot, played around with it in my office with my colleagues and also took a night-time walk with my girlfriend on the streets of Vienna, Austria. For those pictures, I mainly used a Sony alpha 7s.

How was your experience shooting with it? Did you find some difficulties as well as benefits in using the lens?

So you have a fully manual lens and no control from the camera, which is perfect for filmmaking. Focus control is very handy and ergonomic, it’s a good thing for both: filmmakers and photographers. You still have a crisp image on the focus point and full control with fantastic bokeh control; great aperture with f1.9; surreal and unusual look which no other lens can give you.

The lens has its own character – so you can’t even compare it to other lenses. I guess though it’s not a lens for everyone. It's that different kind of experience is what makes it fun to use. But if you search for the unlikely, THIS is the perfect lens. I think that stands perfectly for the ideology of Lomography.

Which photo do you like the most and why?

My favorite picture is this (see photo below). Why? It is one of the first pictures I took with that lens. I just shot anything, anywhere and anyone within the first minutes the lens was attached to my camera. And that's how I found out how amazing this lens is.

What advice would you give to first time users of the New Petzval 58?

Try and experiment, don't expect good or bad. You will find out yourself if you like it or not. And there's no rule when using the bokeh control nob. Use any amount for any kind of picture. That's the cool part about it! Important: Always look for the art and aesthetics of each image.
