Ladytron Member and LomoAmigo Reuben Wu Produces Video Installation for Google
1 9 Share TweetIn Reuben Wu’s world, analogue and digital clank together to make irresistible synthpop. Much to our glee, he does the same with still and moving photography. His new project “Ascension” displays his brand of visual surrealism we’ve come to love.
“SLRs for time lapses plus a motion control, 4K cam on a rail above a scale model of Chicago for the city footage. GoPro time lapse on a car zooming thru tunnels under the city. Inspired by films like Koyaanisqatsi, C’etait un rendezvous and THX1138.” Reuben Wu’s dense description of his new video reminds us of his still photography. Places on earth get the look of a lone planet, thanks to a mixed-media approach to analogue tools. We don’t call him a LomoAmigo for nothing.
As a member of the band Ladytron, he’s no stranger to attention. But it’s his off-duty talents that won over the people at Google, who commissioned him and Digital Giant to do a video installation for the new corporate office in Chicago. The work is called “Ascension,” quite right for something kaleidoscopically rapid and forward-looking.
