Lomopedia: Jupiter-9 2.0 85 mm Lens

6

Another Russian lens makes it to the list yet again. The Jupiter-9 2.0/85 lens is a Russian copy of the Carl Zeiss Sonnar 1:2 85cm lens. It sports a solid metal body, high-quality glass optics and soft focus for distinctive bokeh shots right off the bat.

Image quality-wise, the Jupiter-9 can create clean and crisp images with the right settings. Users can get silky to crisp and detailed images with its smooth adjusting rings. Colors and details register quite well when used with a film camera but it can also go well with videos due to its high-quality design and optics. The Jupiter-9 2.0/85 lens can be used with M42, Leica M39, and Contax RF mounts. It is sometimes tagged as one of the best vintage Russian lenses still out in the market. The Jupiter-9 lens’s qualities make it a great choice for portrait photography.

Despite being a “copy” lens of the original Carl Zeiss Sonnar, the Jupiter-9 can still go toe-to-toe with its original counterpart. Aesthetics-wise, the silver finish makes it look like a high-end lens and the build quality is solid without being too bulky. Its relatively light weight makes it good for an all-day shoot.

A very interesting lens, I use it in both versions (M42 for my Zenit and Praktica cameras), M39 for my Fed and Zorki cameras
