Approximately 146,500 in population, the Matigsalug are indigenous people found in the Tigwa-Salug Valley in San Fernando in Bukidnon province. According to oral tradition, their original settlement was at the mouth of Salug River which is presently Davao City.
In earlier years, they practiced a hunting-and-gathering lifestyle with minimal agriculture efforts. But very recently, the migrant farmers and businessmen from northern Philippines and the island provinces have influenced the Matigsalug to shift to sedentary land cultivation with more or less permanent villages.
What remains of their earlier lifestyle is still evident in their cultural and artistic expressions such as traditional clothing, songs, dances and rituals.
