Kirconnell Flow Nature Reserve, Dumfriesshire Scotland

Kirkconnell Flow is a magical place. Quiet and peaceful; our feet made little sound as we walked alone among the trees and around the bog. We arrived as light was fading at dusk on a dismal October day. We wandered through almost primeval woodland, bordering an ancient raised peat bog. Ancient and mysterious, these bogs are saving the planet: Their stagnant pools and wet vegetation allow decay without releasing carbon into the atmosphere - a carbon sink. They need to be kept wet and squelchy. They are home to plants like sundew and wild cranberry. The dismal light challenged the little 1980's camera I had in my backpack.
