Rim and Vignette
I took a nap and in the strange place between sleep and wake, I thought about making a radial vignette lens effect. The best solution I came up with that wouldn’t take too much time was to take transparency film and use a compass and a black alcohol marker to block out light around a clear small center circle. I cut out a large circle of 55mm in diameter, and fit it into a Haze filter of the same size. I tested it out on a white pumpkin from our garden to test the contrast, and It worked quite well. Now, I have been quite depressed lately, and while I saw this somewhat of a win, I still was disappointed with the photos that I took earlier with a red filter (underexposed landscapes). As a final whim, I was mopping around in the bedroom and I figured I would do a test shot selfie with my new vignette lens. I let the sun light hit just my profile edge, while keeping my face in shadow. The lens was exposed for sunlight (F/22), and the flash from the camera put off just enough light to look like a natural reflection off of something in the room. The result was semi-surreal and tragic, matching my mood, and a bringer of momentary catharsis. Amazing how creativity has the ability to do that to a human.
I am utterly fascinated by this one. Whether it's the composition, mood, or whatever it is, I'm not sure, but I seem to want to keep coming back to it. Well done :)
