Every 25th of April, Portugal celebrates the revolution that brought a 41-years long dictatorship to its end in 1974. Early that day, several platoons of Portuguese soldiers marched to Lisbon and found a faible resistance of the troops that stood loyal to the regime, starting a democracy era in the country without bloodshed. During the celebrations, Celeste Caeiro, a florist living and working in the city, gave red carnages to the soldiers filing off. They placed the carnages in the barrels of their guns. Since then, red carnages became a symbol of democracy, freedom and resistance to fascism in Portugal, and are distributed and shown in every parade celebrating the revolution. These pictures were taken at the 2026 parade in Braga.
