Canon F-1 ORWO NC500

Test of the film Original Wolfen (ORWO) NC 500 with my Canon F-1 and a Canon FD lens 1:2.8 f=100mm during a photo session at the Botanical Garden of Lyon, France, on October 16, 2023. The Original Wolfen (ORWO) NC500 is a negative-color film distributed by InovisCoat GmbH in Germany initially for cinema film (500 ISO) and adapted for 35mm photography at 400 ISO for the standard C-41 process. Expositions were determined for the recommended 400 ISO using a Minolta Autometer III with a 10° finder for selective metering privileging the shadow areas or, most of the time, the very efficient build-in metering of the Canon F-1 that operates also selectively manner in a central rectangular small area. October 16, 2023 Jardin Botanique de Lyon Parc de la Tête d'Or 69006 Lyon After full exposure, the film was processed by a local lab service using the C-41 process. The film was then digitalized using a Sony A7 body adapted to a Minolta Auto Bellows III and a Minolta Slide Duplicator using a lens Minolta Bellow Macro Rokkor 50mm f/3.5 at a reproduction ratio of 1:1. The temperature color of light source of the reproduction system was set at 5600 K so that the RGB chanels were optimally distributed over the tonality range. The reproduced RAW files obtained were processed in LR prior to the final JPEG editions. Color were balanced carefully using the 3 RGB histograms as guidelines to search for a best white balance and tonalities according the computer screen set for the Adobe RGB 1998 color tones. All views of the film are presented in the dedicated album either in the printed framed versions and unframed full-size jpeg together with some smartphone Vivio Y76 documentary pictures. About the camera and the lens : I own this Canon F-1 since April 2022. The body is stamped "N1129" (in the film cartridge magazine) indicated that the camera was manufactured in Japan in November 1973. The lens is stamped "M1011" on the rear baffle indicating a construction in the Canon factory in October 1972. The Canon FD lens 1:2.8 f=100mm is a very early production of April 1971. The camera was used very carefully with almost no sign of age. The photometric circuitry needs, as most of te SLR of that time, a 1.31V mercury oxide battery that I remplaced by a Kanto MR9 adaptor for a SR43 silver oxide battery. The cell operates with a little compensation necessary between EV 8 and 14 , compared to my Minolta Autometer III on a 18% neutral-gray chart.
