Omikuji

Omikuji is random fortunes written on strips of paper.
It is a custom to go to a shrine and draw an omikuji the first day of the year.

Fortunes are 大吉(excellent), 中吉, 小吉, 吉, 凶, and 大凶(terrible).

Omikuji also has messages for you about what you should do and what you shouldn’t do for work, study, money, relationship, etc.

It is also a custom to fold the strip of paper and tie it to trees or wires.
