Mark Slazman’s Lying Awake depicts the internal struggle of a nun who must decide whether or not she should receive a surgery that threaten to sever her intimate spiritual tie with God. The main conflict of this story is the main character’s difficult choice between reason and faith. In this image, the element of faith is symbolized by the praying figure on the left, while the element of reason is represented by the opening eyes that spreads across the image. In the background is the image of light bouncing off the leaves of a pine tree, which is a metaphor for God’s grace. Reason and faith are two very different ways of understanding the greater mysteries around us. While the former is often based on factual observation and analysis, the latter relies on establishing a spiritual connection with a higher being or truth. While people have made great progress discovering the world using both approaches throughout history, I believe that it is important to regard reason and faith as parts of a whole. Perhaps our vision of the world is only complete when we keep an open mind to different ways of perception.
