An early interest in photography was sparked by the way that images could be formed from blank paper with just a bit of light from an enlarger and chemicals. Those afternoons in a small, and very dark, room in the high school basement built a foundation for the future. After taking a break for many years, I picked up a camera again in 2004 and haven’t looked back. I am equally at home with film and digital photography. Matt’s work has been exhibited at Microsoft Corporation and the Fremont Abbey; select photographs have been published in several books. In addition, Matt has been an official parade photographer for the Fremont Summer Solstice Parade for three years running. Finally, in a photography workshop attended with Bridges To Understanding, Matt worked with students in a South Africa township to produce a digital story video built around photographs titled “Ubomi Bam, Impilo Yam” which translates to “My Life, My Health”.

Artist Statement:

Photography is a term rooted in contradiction. After all, Photography is derived from the combination of the Greek words "photos" which means "light" and “graphos” which means “drawing.” When combined, a photograph is defined as a drawing made with light. Yet, the medium has come to be associated with a “darkroom” where its artists print their final images in a small room with no windows. While the rise of digital photography has freed the photographer from this contradiction, the principles of what makes a photograph interesting to experience are still the same. Whether digital or film, some photographs tell stories of time and place while some are more about showing abstract forms and composition.
