The Doshi Retreat on the Vitra Campus is a contemplative space designed by Balkrishna Doshi with his granddaughter Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and her husband Sönke Hoof. Inspired by Indian spirituality, it offers a sensory journey of sound and serenity. It is the first project by Balkrishna Doshi to be completed outside of India – as well as the last design he worked on prior to his passing in 2023.

Over the course of a week (five days were spent on the Salkantay Trekking), I got to know a bit of Cusco, did the 7 Lagunas trail (near Rainbow Mountain), drove to Soraypampa where I visited Humantay Lake, and began the classic Salkantay Trekking circuit, passing through Colcapampa and Lucmabamba until reaching Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo). From there, I hiked up and visited the Machu Picchu sanctuary before finally heading back home, covering a little over 120 km during the five days of trekking.

The open-air museum in Oerlinghausen near Bielefeld was the first of its kind in the world. On the grounds, you’ll find reconstructed dwellings from the Paleolithic period to the early Middle Ages. I found the exhibition on ancient clothing especially interesting—not only does it present replicas, but it also shows how these garments were made back then. There are also working replicas of furnaces that bring the ancient history of metallurgy to life. The pigs and goats living in the museum will easily steal your heart. But the coolest thing is that every weekend, different living history enthusiasts come to the museum, making the exhibitions truly come alive. And of course, the AFM Oerlinghausen lies in the magnificent scenery of the Teutoburg Forest, which makes the experience even more special.
Shot half a double at some point on my Olympus OM2n, forgot, and loaded it in my Nikonos for a Hawaii trip. Pretty cool how some came out with natural textures.
