Le 24 novembre 1973, alors que l’US Navy avait une de ses bases militaires à Keflavík, un de leurs avions (un Douglas DC-3) a été contraint de s’écraser sur la plage de sable noir de Sólheimasandur, suite à un problème de carburant. Tout l’équipage a survécu, mais la carcasse de l’avion est restée là. (Google translation) On November 24, 1973, while the US Navy had one of its military bases in Keflavík, one of their aircraft (a Douglas DC-3) was forced to crash on the black sand beach of Sólheimasandur, fuel problem.
