In this edition of the LC-A+ Lomo “Intern” Amigos, we’d like you to meet Gavin Thomas! Gavin was an intern for the Lomography New York City office.

Gavin is a New York City based freelance Photographer who is known best for his experimental and photo-journalistic style. He has shot for a number of editorial assignments and magazine features including New York Magazine.com, Live Music Productions NYC, and Maxwell Records. His Published and Award Winning works include Blackbook Raw 50 for 2007, the 2007 UnScene NY Tour, the PDN student photo contest, PDN Olympus Visionage, 2006 PDN 30 Under 30, held at St. Bonaventure. Gavin is a graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology’s intense photo school where he earned his BFA in Professional Photographic Illustration.

How long have you been a Lomographer (or are you new to
this whole thing)?
On and off since August 2005. I got into Lomo after buying the pop 9 camera from the George Eastman House while I was studying at RIT.

Describe the LC-A+ in five words.
Harmonious, Precise, Smooth, Solid, Tranquil

The strangest, funniest, or hands-down greatest photographic/Lomographic encounter that you have ever had?
I was photographing 50 Cent for Rap-Up Magazine and he asked if the LCA was a real camera and if he was going to be able to see the pictures due to the small size of the camera.

You recently interned for Lomography’s New York office… tell us a bit about the experience.
I had a great experience at the office. Everyone at the office is great, easy going, and hard working.

If you could be anywhere, doing anything, right now, where would it be and what would you do?
I would totally be traveling the globe shooting Fashion with my LCA and LCA+ taking in all the sites, sounds, and flavors of the world.

You have some very interesting shots from some set-up photo-shoots. We’re certainly curious about the Mohawk girl and the inflatable doll. But more importantly, what’s it like using the LC-A+ for a set-up shoot?
It is a lot of fun to use an LCA+ for shooting fashion or studio portraits. I add a wireless trigger to the hotshoe of the LCA+ and then I have the freedom to move anywhere and also position my strobe where I want. I end up having some control but also leave room for many of the golden rules of Lomography!

The one person (living or deceased) who you would most like to photograph?
Abraham Lincoln

What advice can you give to future Lomography interns?
Eat @ Bridgefresh! The lunch specials are amazing, cheap prices, huge portions, and variety.

Your advice to future LC-A+ shooters?
Just experiment! Try shooting with different films. Shoot doubles, find other Lomographers from around the world to shoot doubles with. Definitely take your camera everywhere. The possibilities are really endless, and don’t forget to have FUN!
