What chemicals are needed for self-developing film?

Developer, stop bath and fixer are the three key chemicals for self-developing film. Meanwhile, fixer remover and wetting agent are also optional chemicals to ensure a clean result.

In general, developing black and white film is easier and more forgiving than color film with the C-41 process, which requires consistent temperature throughout the development process. Black and white development uses three chemicals: developer, fixer and the optional stop bath, while colored processing can also require bleach and a stabilizer.

Developer

Dissolved in water, the developer is a solution that converts the latent images in a film negative into visible images.

Stop Bath

Stop bath is a chemical used to stop the developing process in order to avoid over-development. Instead of dedicated stop bath products, using distilled water for rinsing off the developer before proceeding with the fixer is also an option.

Fixer

The fixer makes the images on a negative permanent and resistant to light. It also removes excess or unexposed chemicals in the film emulsion, preventing it from being further exposed while also ensuring clarity in the visible images.

Wetting Agent

A wetting agent (such as Photo-Flo) is used to ensure cleaner negatives by clearing out water stains which could appear once the negatives are scanned. Many people also use distilled water to rinse the fixer after self-development, instead of dedicated wetting agent products.
