Why are color filters sometimes used for black and white photography?

Color filters (also considered to be color correcting) are multi-purpose use filters that boost the creative possibilities for both color and black and white photography in powerful ways.

In black and white photography color filters have the ability to increase contrast in your image, reduce the amount of light hitting your film, and slightly modify certain aspects of the image to adapt to weather conditions.

For example, if you opt to shoot on a bright and sunny day, colored filters could come in handy if you’d like to cast a slightly moodier look to your image, and bring down the bright white of the sky.

Different colored filters produce slightly different results to black and white images. Generally, yellow filters are known to only lightly increase contrasts, while red filters are the go-to for a stronger effect, with a lot of contrast.
