In what situations should I use a flash?

The most straightforward time to use a flash is when you have a lack of light in a scene, but beyond this there are other situations in which you might want to use a flash.

Unless you have a steady hand, using flash indoors is a good idea as some indoor lighting may not be strong enough to get a bright and sharp picture. Another good situation to use a flash is when there is heavy backlight, such as when the sun is behind a subject. Using the flash will allow you to more easily capture details in this situation. Furthermore using flash in certain conditions like overcast days, dusk and dawn will give you better chances of capturing clear and sharp images. Lastly, you can also use flash creatively to obtain pronounced motion blur.
