How to choose the perfect background for a portrait photo?

When considering the background to a portrait photo, you should think about what you want to achieve. Some backgrounds are designed to highlight the subject, while others add context to the photograph.

Simplicity is often the best choice as a busy background can look cluttered and visually confusing. Whether shooting a pre-planned portrait in a studio or a street portrait, many photographers choose to shoot against a plain background with a solid color to minimize distractions and put the emphasis on their subject. They may also choose a background with a color that complements the skin tone and clothing of their subject.

You could also play with compositions that highlight your subject, such as using strategically placed lights or leading lines.

You may choose to keep the background in focus or use a shallow depth of field to blur the background. Again this will make your subject stand out against it. You can also create cool bokeh effects that give the photo a cinematic feel.

If you’re having trouble finding the perfect background in your chosen location, try shooting from a different angle. By experimenting with an unusual angle you may find the perfect background for your portrait. This could be shooting from a low angle and capturing the sky around your subject, or the exact opposite and shooting from above. Don’t be afraid to try something unconventional and find what works for you.

Finally you can use visual elements in the background to help tell your story. This is a popular technique in documentary and environmental photography. It helps to enhance the meaning of your portrait of the person, and create a strong narrative in your work.
