Tigh na Rosan

This house is Tigh na Rosan (Scots Gaelic for 'House of the Roses'), and was the childhood home of British author David Thomson. He writes about Tigh na Rosan in his books 'The People of the Sea' and 'Nairn in Darkness and in Light'. As a very young boy in the early 20th century he suffered injury and ill health, and medical advice was that he should move to the north coast of Scotland to live with his grandparents and recuperate. While living in Nairn, he met local fishermen and explored along the beaches and sea harbours and learned about the traditional stories of seals and mermaids. This led to a lifetime of fascination with seal legends, and his famous book 'The People of the Sea'. David Thomson died in 1989 at the age of 74.
