Railroad Line Pole

This photo was taken on the Richard Martin Trail, a walking trail that runs from Athens, Alabama through Elkmont, Alabama to the Tennessee State Line at Veto, Alabama. This trail is on the right of way of an rail line that was built before the U.S Civil War, and was abandoned in the 1980s. For most of its history the line was operated by the L&N, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. A newer line was built east of this line in the years before the U.S. entered the First World War. While walking the trail you often hear trains running today only a few miles away. When the railway service was ended the track was removed, but many traces of the railroad, such as this pole, still remain decades later.
