Auvers-sur-Oise: the Impressionism Escape from Paris

Escape from the beautiful streets of Paris into the amazing art scene of Auvers-sur-Oise. This little town, only 40kms away, is the resting place of brilliant artists such as Van Gogh and holds the perfect combination between nature’s beauty and art itself.

Auvers-sur-Oise, is located a few kilometers away from Paris, it’s super easy to reach by a 30min direct train that leaves from the central Gare du Nord. This direct Transilien Train normally runs from April to October every year. If you go beyond this period, it will take you some more time to get there as you will have to travel to Pontoise to transfer to a local line to Auvers.

Still, the journey is worthwhile…

Once at Auvers, your itinerary is enriched with culture and nature. Here, several impressionist painters have lived, such as Daubigny, Pissarro, Cézanne and van Gogh. In fact, Auvers is the final resting place of Vincent and his brother Theo van Gogh.

It was here that Van Gogh lived during the last two months of his life (from the 21st of May to the 29th July of 1890) and where he painted around 70 paintings, more than one per day!

Walking through Auvers feels like entering Van Gogh’s paintings. This feeling of immersion is catalyzed by simply walking from the Notre Dame D’Auvers church up the hill.

Van Gogh brought fame to this small church with his “Church at Auvers”, an oil painting now displayed at the Orsay Museum, in Paris.

This walk also leads us to the cemetery where we can visit Vincent and Theo’s tombs side by side. Looking around, some beautiful graves from other artists can also be seen.

If you can chose when to visit Auvers, the best time is during spring or summer. A sunny day with a blue sky will make your walk more enjoyable and may motivate you to do a picnic.

Our visit was in July, and we had no luck with the weather as it was a rainy day. The sky was grey and the light was not the best one. Yet, this did not prevent me from capturing every moment with the Diana F+ and the Mini Diana.

Auvers feels like another world after visiting Paris, it will surprise you! Between the magic of the impressionist art and nature’s relaxing whisper, this little town will dazzle you.

For more info on the painting, “Church at Auvers” check out the Musee d’Orsay website.
