At 29, Brooklyn-based Winona Barton-Ballentine is already on her way to becoming an established fashion photographer, working with models for big publications such as A4 Magazine, Foam Magazine, New York Times, and Nylon Magazine. Her chosen medium? Film.

For Winona, a life as a photographer was inevitable, being fascinated with photography at a very young age. She pursued this calling and studied in Bard College, graduating with a BA degree in photography in 2002.

Catching the radar of many a magazine for her vintage-y fashion snapshots, Winona shares in an interview with Fashion Gone Rogue that she tries to only shoot film. “I prefer it because of the quality, the grain, the depth of field; the nostalgic quality it creates,” she says.

With film, the results aren’t instant. However, it doesn’t deter her from creating beautiful fashion photographs, believing that she makes better ones when she can’t see the images right away. “There is an element of mystery and it forces me to focus on connecting with the subject and trusting that the images will capture that moment and connection in a genuine way.”
