Natalia Yanchak | Lead Singer of The Dears | Montreal, QC
Benefiting Charity: David Suzuki Foundation

Playing keyboards with various bands was never a serious gig, until she heard that local group The Dears was looking for a keyboard player. After seeing just one show in 1998, she agreed to join and from then on began the complimentary relationship with songwriter Murray Lightburn: he was the creative, and she was the business. The Dears recorded the band’s debut, End Of A Hollywood Bedtime Story (released in 2000), and laid a foundation for dark, orchestral pop in Canada: playing shows with a dozen musicians on stage – including brass and strings – back when the power guitar trio was the norm.

Natalia has long given up the role of music critic, but still puts her Creative Writing degree to work writing for Pop Montreal and musing about culture on her blog, Most recently Natalia has embarked on a self-publishing project based on her science-fiction writing. But being in The Dears remains her full-time job. Natalia and Murray continue to live in Montreal, are now married and have a 5-year-old daughter.
