Santorini: A Quick Look at a Breathtaking Island

Santorini is one of the most popular islands of the Aegean Sea. With its spectacular views from 400 feet high; thanks to an ancient eruption, the combination of the the blue sky and the sea against the whiteness of the buildings make it is a must-see location for all.

The Boring Stuff
Santorini, is a name than many say came from the Italian name “Santa Irene”. Saint Irene that is, a church that gave its name to the whole island. It is also known as “Thera”, which is its ancient Greek name. The island is about 73 square kilometers with a population of something more than 13,000 and one volcano!

Quick History of the Island
The volcano is what characterizes Santorini more than anything else. The island used to be originally round, ’til the eruption of the volcano in an amazing fashion, eliminating more or less most of the island. That was a shame, since the island had a booming economy. Mind you, we are talking about the time of 2000 BC! So did the eruption brought anything good to the island? Well, it created an island shaped like a half moon and the remaining is where the volcano is located with vertical cliffs of 400 feet high around it.

Being there…
So, how is the island? Due to the fact that you have buildings sitting on top of the cliff, all buildings have an maphitheatrical view of the island and the volcano. Just imagine that each balcony or porch is actually the rooftop of the building below! The island boasts of fantastic wine, thanks to its ash rich soil. Due to its volcanic history, you also get out-of-this-world-seasides like red and black colour sand! Food is excellent here as well. Small roads paved with stone, white buildings, amazing food, and good wine…if you find these attractive, go and visit Santorini!

Wonderful location, gallery, history. FLASH!! 2500bce!! Stronghyli erupts enthusiastically leaving behind only tiny Thera, ending Minoan civilisation and pretty much cleaning out the whole eastern Mediterranean. We need to think about where we build our cities. (See Seattle and Cascadia Subduction Zone.)

The site of Akrothiri is worth the cab ride. The ruins lie on a ridge on the outer rim of the volcano overlooking the ocean. Often windy.

thanks all for your comments and likes ! Glad you liked it. Will try on future articles to put more photos...
For clarification: Akrotiri, as metnioned by emperornorton, is worth the visit, since it is a Greek version of Pompeii ; its basically a city preserved thanks to the dust and ash that fell after the volcano erupted.
