In a state packed with world-class skiing, Breckenridge hits a sweet spot of challenge, accessibility, ambiance, and fun. The powder is thick and fine, the mountains are tall, and there is great skiing and snowboarding available to all skill levels.
Colorado is known for its world class ski resorts and there are as many resorts as there are personalities of skiers and boarders here. I’ve been coming to this great state since I was a child, and I’ve had the opportunity to live here for almost 8 years now. While I love variety and make a habit of skiing multiple resorts each year, I have certainly settled on Breckenridge as my go-to favorite.
For people used to Colorado’s incredible snow, the thick inches of soft fine powder are nothing new. If you’ve only ever skied the east coast, then prepare to be spoiled. In a great year, Breckenridge can net hundreds of inches that comes in almost continuously throughout the ski season. The word “epic” is thrown around a lot in those years.
But great snow is available all over the state, so what makes Breckenridge unique? I think it hits a true sweet spot of accessibility versus challenge for a lot of skiers and riders. The mountain is set up with multiple access points to 5 different peaks. This, plus several incredible open bowls make for a giant range of difficulty that can keep the interest of all ability levels.
And did I mention that it’s the highest chairlift accessible point in Colorado? If that’s not high enough, you can always hike the last 100 or so feet up!
The town of Breckenridge has an active nightlife scene without the pomp and extreme expense of Vail and Aspen. There’s always something to do without being overwhelming. And most of it is easily within walking distance.
When friends and loved ones visit from out of state, we always take them to Breck for a snowy getaway. So in a state full of winter fun, Breckenridge has found a special place for my family. It’s a great vacation spot whether you live in Colorado or not. I can’t recommend it enough!
