Chez Gladines is one of my favorite restaurants in Paris. In the center of a picturesque neighborhood, you’ll find its food excellent, the ambiance great, and the price very reasonable. Eating there ALWAYS leads to a fun night out, so don’t schedule anything important in the morning!
Chez Gladines (30, rue des Cinq-Diamants, 75013 Paris, France) can be found at the Butte aux Cailles, a charming neighborhood in Paris’ 13th arrondissement. Unless you arrive before 20h (it doesn’t accept reservations), you’ll certainly find a huge group of people waiting outside. Don’t Panic! Go inside, put your name on the bartender’s list and get a bottle of wine. Wait outside while drinking and you’ll soon be called. As chaotic as it may look, you never miss your turn. And you’ll be inebriated with joy by the time you sit down.
Food wise, they serve typical french food from the Basque country. It’s copious, delicious, and very reasonably priced. Be sure to get at least one Steak Montagnard, which is a veal escalope with cheese, bacon, potatoes and cream sauce – yum! Don’t be surprised if someone tries to steal yours. You can also get one of the delicious and gigantic salads, which are served in bowls as big as buckets and have such veggies as duck gizzards, cured ham, and goat cheese toasts. You’ll be proud if you finish it!
The restaurant has a decent wine selection but I would recommend trying the Sangria, very good and refreshing. You’ll soon be asking for more!
If you manage to get any desert, which is a challenge, you’ll find the gateau basque (a basque cake) or the île flottante (a floating island of meringue on a sea of fresh silky custard) quite enjoyable (sorry, no photos of it, we devoured it before I could reach for the camera).
So don’t miss out on this reasonably priced, fun, and authentic restaurant from where you are sure to leave with a happy face and in a good mood!
And since you’re in a neighborhood full of bars packed with young hipsters and students from the nearby Cité Universitaire, just walk to any nearby place and get ready to paint the town red!
