Festival Mall Doubled

Shooting inside the mall is usually not allowed but getting good results from inconspicuous shoot is definitely gratifying.

After 9-11, other bombing incidents and bomb threats, security has never been tighter in public buildings, airports, piers, train systems and most establishments in metro cities in the Philippines. Malls in particular have increased the number of guards patrolling around and checking the entrances and exits. Before it was just okay to take pictures inside the mall but nowadays, as you start to click the shutter expect a guard to approach you and then apprehend you. Worse if s/he confiscates your gadget.

But this rule is quite inconsistent across different malls. Some would just allow customers to take their souvenir photos. Others are too strict about it, specially if you sport digital cameras and long lenses that people think you are a pro who would earn money from those shots or you belong to organized syndicates who may be spying inside the mall for opportunities to exact their criminal intentions.

This hang-up against cameras by the establishment is usually relaxed when there is a mall event being celebrated. On such occasion, you would see the crowd bringing out their phonecams or digicams, or photographers (amateur or professional) documenting the event. Due to the nature of our cameras which oftentimes look more toy than real, lomographers get less suspicion. ‘Not being taken seriously’ can sometimes be to our shooting advantage that it allows us more freedom to capture our lomographic interests.

Such is the case when I took these shots inside a shopping mall in Alabang. My interest was to shoot shop displays and do doubles. The displays were lit differently which afforded me to capture a range of lights and shades in my photographs without flash. These photos were taken inconspicuosly while passing by shop windows. I tried to set the focus distance a few steps before reaching my desired position in front of the glass window. With a quick click I moved on to the next shop, looking like a normal window shopper.

Camera Collections: theonlydrp's Vintage and Handmade Gear

Some lomographers prefer to hoard as many analog cameras their shelves and budgets can support. Some would rather keep a manageable number that they can regularly shoot with. Community member Joshua Kennedy belongs to the latter group. From 40 cameras, he downsized his collection to 13, as he puts it, "really good ones" that suit his shooting habits and style. In this interview, he breaks down his small yet dependable arsenal of vintage and handmade cameras and how an organized schedule allows him to shoot with each one on a regular basis.
