The City with the Hardest Pavements in the World!

New York, New York what a place. Home to the prettiest dogs, confusing subway, green spots within its streetscape and of course it’s hard pavements.

I chose New York as stop one of my USA architecture adventure. Buildings that I have only read about and seen photos of will now be more of a reality for me. Dragging my mom, aunt, and cousin along, we set out on a mission to see as much as we could in our 4-and-a-half days there!

I was kindly organised with an apartment by Union Square Park and woke up each morning to the site of the Empire State building! I was also lucky enough to arrive on the day of the Lomography bus tour to Brooklyn. After a bit of confusion about where I was going and how the street system worked, we made it in time. We got on the bus with our borrowed Diana's and LC-A's and my own Spinner ready with about 10 rolls of film just in case, and set out on our first adventure!

This was just one of many. I went from the East Side to the West Side from Central Park to the Financial District and seeing the Rockefeller, the Guggenheim, the Plaza Hotel, Times Square and everywhere in between. I have never walked so much in my life over those days and was literally crawling into my apartment every night. My highlight was most definitely the Highline Park in the meat packing district, as one of the many green spaces within the city, this is the best example of urban rejuvenation. I can only hope to bring some of those ideas into my work and be inspired in my own designs for the future.
