What is MX7? Is it a car? Is it a plane? No, relax, it’s just a book. Very recently, Galería Elvira González in Madrid, hosted an exhibition of photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe. The show was curated by Pedro Almodóvar. Apparently Pedro was not the first star to curate Mapplethorpe. Read on.
Over a period of seven years since 2003, seven contemporary artists, each reviewed Mapplethorpe’s body of work and selected those works that resonated to them in order to create a show. Cindy Sherman was the first to curate a show from the Mapplethorpe Archive and this happened at Sean Kelly Gallery in New York. That led to six other exhibitions around the world: Catherine Opie in Los Angeles, David Hockney in London, Vik Muniz in Sao Paulo, Hedi Slimane in Paris, Robert Wilson in Salzburg, and Sterling Ruby in Brussels. This groundbreaking series of exhibitions is documented photograph after photograph in MX7-Mapplethorpe X7.
The book also includes interviews by Richard Flood, curator of the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. The publication offers new and interesting insights into Mapplethorpe’s photography and explores his lasting impact on contemporary art.
