When my girlfriend suggested that we get away recently I wasn’t expecting the destination to be a Buddhist kadampa meditation centre. Any fears were short lived though as we discovered this truly stunning and peaceful part of North Yorkshire.
The Wolds Retreat is a bed and breakfast run by the Madhyamaka KMC buddhists in the county of North Yorkshire just by Pocklington. It is set in stunning grounds in the countryside far away from the stress and crowds of the city.
You don’t have to be a Buddhist to stay there (in fact don’t worry about the Buddhist thing at all, you don’t need to be put off by it) and the prices are fantastic. The rooms are 4-star and are the best bed and breakfast rooms I’ve ever stayed in. The linen and beds are so comfy, the selection of teas fantastic and the outdoor seating perfect for a relaxing evening hot chocolate as the sun goes down. It’s amazing it doesn’t cost more to stay there.
Being surrounded by the countryside, not only do you have plenty of photo opportunities but it’s as relaxing and peaceful as you could possibly want. At first I was surprised when Nicola suggested The Wolds Retreat as a getaway but it turned out to be the perfect place to unwind.
If you have a wide-angle of panoramic camera be sure to take the scenic drive route from Pocklington too. It’s signposted and leads you on country road uphill past fields and secluded churches until eventually you reach the top. At this point you’ll be sure to ‘wow’ as it seems the whole world opens up in front of your very eyes.
I couldn’t finish the article without mentioning the breakfast either. Both traditional English and continental options are available and there’s so much you won’t be going hungry for a while! On the first morning of my stay I had apple juice soaked muesli (a first for me) and it was so nice I had it the next day too.
If you want to escape the city I can recommend The Wolds Retreat at Madhyamaka KMC without hesitation. The prices (for what you get) are unbelievable, the rooms are so comfortable you won’t fail to go home relaxed and the location is prime for some photo opportunities. I’ll certainly be going back on this time I’ll be taking my Spinner 360!
The Spinner 360° goes beyond the confines of standard panoramic cameras. See everything around you (literally!), and be swept away by truly spectacular results. Head to our Online Shop and get your own Spinner 360°!
