Keukenhof, the flower’s kitchen

Near a small town called Lisse in the Netherlands, lays one of the most beautiful gardens and simultaneously the largest bulb flower park in the world, the Keukenhof! If you’re interested in making an urban getaway and visiting it, be patient and organized since it is only open for 3 months a year.

Keukenhof stands for “kitchen garden” and every year are placed in its ground, by hand, around 7 million flowers bulbs. This huge garden covers an area of 32hectares with millions of tulips of 100 different varieties. Every year the garden is open to the public for 3 months and during that time the entire garden’s splendor is showed to the world. This period starts early in the spring and goes ’til May.

It is located in an area called the Duin en Bollenstreek (Dune and Bulb Region) and originally the ground’s park was, in the 15th century, a hunting area. In that time, they collected the herbs for the kitchen of the castle that belonged to Jacoba van Beieren. This explains the garden’s name. After her death, the land passed to the hands of Baron and Baroness Van Pallandt. They invited landscape architects, J.D. and L.P. Zocher to design the castle’s garden and overtime it has always been the base of Keukenhof. These architects were also the ones who designed the famous Vondelpark in Amsterdam.

Every year it’s visited by people from all over the world, and in the last 60 years, more than 44 million people visited this place. Due to all these, the Keukenhof already won a bunch of prizes and it has claimed to be the most photographed place in the world.

It is, unquestionably, an amazing place to spend an entire day and get away from the city. It is certainly worth a visit and you’ll have a great time. Just relax and let your senses free. Enjoy the endless colours and diverse fragrances. Besides many green spots to rest you can walk around for at least 15kms, that’s the length of the footpaths together.

If you decide to visit this astonishing garden don’t miss the opportunity to take a ride to the tulip fields in the surroundings, it’s a unique experience.
