The Living History - Bergen!

Bergen is an international town with small-town charm and atmosphere. The city is like a spectacular amphitheatre clambering up the mountain sides, overlooking the sea, embracing the tourists. Roaming through living history in this modern yet well-preserved 900 year-old city, this is the gateway to the wildest and loveliest fjords of Norway.

Bergen is located far west in Norway, sheltered from the North Sea only by a number of islands. It is the second largest city in Norway and the most popular gateway to the fjords of West Norway. It is the most hilly and mountainous in Norway. The city center is surrounded by a group of mountains and peaks known as the Seven Mountains. The geographic conditions of the city are very visible; limited space to build on made it necessary in the 19th century that new city blocks be built on the steep slopes of Mount Fløyen.

Due to the city’s geographical condition – close to the northern sea and surrounded by mountains, it has precipitation almost 2/3 of the days in a year.

During our visit there, we’re lucky enough to catch the city on a sunny day. Well, not exactly a sunny day, it was late afternoon after the rain, which was even better because we got to breathe and see the clear air. We stayed downtown until late to enjoy the amazing sunset in the north, with reflections of the sun all over the water on the ground and sea. Within the city center, walking is the best way to get around. It was just a 20-minute-walk from the railway station to the harbour. :)

Bergen is served by a railway line which runs from Oslo. The journey takes about seven hours and offers beautiful views, especially for the last three hours. It claims to be the world’s most scenic train ride. I was so down that while I was visiting there, the railway was under maintenance so they transformed my most scenic train ride to the most scenic bus ride! >.< I have to come here again! :)
