Lubitel Love From Waist Level Chapter 42: The Lomographic Society International

In the early 1990s, a handful of Viennese students took a trip to Prague and happened upon a small enigmatic Russian camera called the Lomo Kompakt Automat. Immediately, they started a new style of artistic experimental photography using their unorthodox snapshot cavortings.

The Lomographic Society // How Everything Started

Their approach: Take as many photographs (Lomographs) as possible in the most impossible of situations possible and from the most unusual positions possible and having them developed as cheaply as possible. The result was a flood of authentic, colorful, crazy, off-the-wall, and unfamiliar snapshots, which could be combined and mounted on panels to form a sea of thousands of Lomographs. Lomographic events, exhibitions, and interactive projects were soon rolled out across the world, and Lomographic “Embassies” were founded in over 75countries. To date, major shows have been held in Moscow, New York, Vienna, Berlin, St. Petersburg, Paris, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Sidney, Melbourne, Sao Paolo, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Guadalajara, Medelin, Toronto, Oslo, Stockholm, Malmö, Helsinki, Cape Town, Johannesburg, Seoul, Havana, Zurich, Cologne, Madrid, Cairo, Frankfurt, Dubai, Oslo, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Buenos Aires, London, Barcelona, Beijing, and many other cities. In fact, you might want to cast a quick glance at to see what’s going down at this very moment.
