Everyone Loves the Photo Booth!

From Amélie to Warhol to Karl Lagerfeld, everyone loves the photo booth!

I think we all remember how central the photo booth was to the plot of Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain. How Amélie first encounters Nino as he collects scraps of unwanted photographs from underneath a photobooth in the Abesses metro station in Paris, and how she eventually sends him messages in the form of photobooth pictures, enticing him to come forward to retrieve his lost album full of ripped photographs.

Like Nino, Andy Warhol, too, made his own album of photo booth pictures. “Andy Warhol Photobooth Pictures” was published posthumously in 1989 by the Robert Miller Gallery of New York to accompany an exhibition of the photo strips.

Warhol’s obsession with photo booths began in 1963 when Harper’s Bazaar commissioned him to do a layout for a feature on the arts. For this he turned to photo booths.

More recently, Chanel’s creative director Karl Lagerfeld also showed some love for the snapshot machine. The photo booth was featured prominently in the fashion house’s fall 2011 campaign starring Freja Beha Erichsen Lagerfeld.
