Lençois Maranhenses - Stranger than paradise

Lençois Maranhenses is a place you have to see if you go to Brazil. It’s a place you have to see at all because it’s unique and wonderful.

Lençois Maranhenses is a place you have to see if you go to Brazil. It’s a place you have to see at all because it’s unique and wonderful.

An infinite desert of white dunes, very high dunes. And in the middle a lot of lakes, little and big lakes. It the bigger lakes you can find vegetation and fishes. In the smaller ones there aren’t, but the water is always extremely clean and transparent. It’s rain water, so in the rain season there’re more lakes, and bigger, than in the other seasons (if you go on August you’ll find a lot!).

It’s very enjoying to go down the dunes, on foot or like a rolling sausage and fall down in the lake after a 50 mt tumble. In some lakes there’re a lot of very little fish that come to you as you are a juicy food and they try to eat you, it’s a little boring, but they’re not in every lake.

The best way to get there is by Toyota from Barreirinhas, a small village that is not far away (less than an hour). Usually tours leave at 9 in the morning for the first trip, and at 2 pm for the second one, both tours take 4 hours including the trip to reach the place, but the best choice is to ask your guide to remain all the day! They’ll ask you to pay the double because you’ll leave 1 vacant place in the first come back trip and 1 vacant place in the second go trip, but if you haggle you can get a good fare.

If you’re very fair skinned or you suffer the sun, it could be hard. I was there in a cloudy day and it’s the best, in a sunny day I don’t know if I could resist. Anyway, remember the sun protection, a hat and 2 lt of water. And something to eat: in Lençois you’ll find only nature, there aren’t trash can, so don’t forget your garbage (fortunately no-one is used to forget it, the place it’s too special to be ruined). The best time is when every group disappear at 1 p.m. and you remain alone in the desert, nobody around you, only sky, dunes and water, and a big silence: it’s a paradise!!! You look around and you think “I never see something like this before” it’s a great feeling. But don’t worry, you will never find a lot of people, take a walk for ten minutes and you will be alone with the wind, the sky, the desert…don’t miss this place in your life!

How to Develop Photos on Stone in a Darkroom

I have always loved the idea of seeing my photos on stone and other natural materials. So, a few months ago, I began googling how it could be done. This is how I discovered (and fell in love with) liquid emulsion. Liquid emulsion is photographic emulsion which you can melt down and paint on any surface. You can then expose an image and develop it using traditional darkroom chemicals. In this article, I would like to explain the process a little, so that if you are also interested in giving this fun process a go, you can!

    Tipster: DIY X-Pro Redscale

Browsing through the Lomography website, you can find a lot of redscale shots, which are all done on color negative films. I asked myself if it’s possible to redscale a slide or chrome film and then cross process it. (And yes, it is.) In this tipster I’m going to teach you how to create the bloodiest homemade redscale film I've ever come across.
