Before I bought my quirky twins, the Sprocket Rocket and the Spinner 360, I hadn’t had a chance to shoot panoramic sprocket analogue photos as I can’t afford the Horizon. After I bought this pair of twins, I discovered their quirks after shooting a few rolls.
After the films were developed, I find that most of the shots are underexposed, although I shot it around late afternoon (4-5pm) and the sky is not cloudy at all. This is when I realised that the Sprocket Rocket is a light hungry camera. The best is to feed it with ASA400 negatives or ASA200 slide films. This will keep it happy and produce nicely exposed photos. If there is no high speed film available, then the flash is a must.
Another quirk of the Sprocket Rocket is that the mode switch can be accidentally shifted from “N” to “B”. I had a couple of overexposed shots due to this quirk.
Next up is the Spinner 360. This is a very-simple-to-operate camera and it produces stunning 360 panoramic shots. This is also a great conversation starter. People are always curious about it and usually surprised when told that this is a film camera and not a traffic speed camera or loud hailer.
If there is one quirk about this camera, it is that one should always leave the lens hood on. There was a time when I was too lazy to attach the lens hood. As a result, every pull of the string only yielded me 3-4 frames of exposure instead of the normal 5-6 frames. I guess it is because the lens hood actually adds weight and centrifugal force to the camera body, enabling it to spin more revs!
In conclusion, as long as one understands the quirky twins, one can capture stunning panoramic shots with minimal effort!
