Go Skateboarding Day

Official or not, it’s a holiday strictly observed by many. And for these many, whose idea of fun is riding a thin board with rickety wheels (the risk of a broken bone makes it even funner), it’s a day to let the grind be heard around the world.

Began in 2004, Go Skateboarding Day was conceived by the International Association of Skateboarding Companies to make the sport more accessible to the public. It was set for June 21 (today!), the first day of summer, the time of many a recreational activity.

The events vary from nation to nation. Some areas hold organized affairs like fundraisers, contests, protests (it’s no secret that skateboarding and the law have had their share of conflicts), and demos.

But also expect to see the emo skater celebrating alone, often in his own garage. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. After all, the day is meant for everyone to acknowledge skateboarding as a sport, and that doesn’t necessarily require company.

Be sure to bring your multi-lens cameras for those action-packed shots. Remember, analogue coverages of public events are requested posts for the month of June.
