Kodak Ultramax 400

The Kodak Ultramax 400 is a great and versatile color negative film. It works well in all light situations, be it sunny daylight or low light conditions. It is fairly cheap and widely available in the states. I recommend that every lomographer keep some rolls of this film in the fridge!

I came upon this film by accident. It all started with my friend from the states coming to visit me in Switzerland. She asked me if there was anything she could bring me and I immediately thought of some cool new slide film, that either isn’t available here or too expensive. As my friend isn’t into photography at all, I compiled a list of slide films she could buy for me. When she finally got here, I was all excited to see what she brought me! The excitement soon turned into disappointment when she handed me two 3 packs of Kodak Ultramax 400. Even though I had never heard of this film before, I could tell right away that it wasn’t the slide film I asked for. My friend’s reaction was funny though: “Sorry, I had no idea what you were talking about, but I got a good deal on this one!”

I put the film on my shelf and forgot about it for a while. Later, when my vacation to Beirut was coming up I remembered the Ultramax 400 and thought I’d take some rolls with me just in case I’d run out of slide film or would need a higher ISO than 100.

I was very glad I did. I put a roll in my Diana Mini just to see what would come out. I shot the whole roll in sunny daylight conditions and the pictures turned out beautifully. It is now one of my favorite films to use in my Diana Mini. The soft lens of the Diana Mini and the strong and beautiful colors of the Ultramax are a great combination.

I also put a roll in my LC-A+ because I wanted to take some pictures in the evening and it was already getting dark. I wasn’t sure if there would be enough light, so I decided against expensive slide film and used the Ultramax.

I love the grain in the pictures and the dark, blueish tones. I think they came out very cool. I will definitely use this film again in my LC-A+, especially in low light conditions.

All in all I think the Kodak Ultramax 400 is great for all conditions, which makes it perfect to take on vacations or traveling in general. With this film you can never go wrong.

Back to my friend. I’m not disappointed anymore she brought me the wrong kind of film, I’m actually very happy she did! In fact, she is getting a box ready to send to me and this time I specifically asked for Kodak Ultramax 400!
