Escape the City: Immerse Yourself In Twilight

I have once mentioned this incredible piece of art in an article, but now, months later, I still think it deserves its own space. Read here about the “Twilight Arch” and why there is no place better to “let go”.

It all started when I went to the Modern Art Museum in Frankfurt. Lots of interesting stuff, a lot of it photography related, which came as a surprise really. Those interested in a detailed review, you can read about it here.

However, this article is about a very specific piece of art called the “Twilight Arch”. It is a piece created by James Turrell who primarily deals with light and space. Looking through some of his other works I have to say I’m amazed by the minimalism and power of his art.

So what is the Twilight Arch? Here:

Confused? So was I. Here is how I got to know this artwork: Basically, you walk into a dark room. It is so dark, you can’t see anything around you, and if someone was sitting on the floor, you would only know when you’ve already stepped on them. You walk in, and take 10-15 seconds to adjust to the dark. And then you see it in the distance…a glow. Purplish, blueish. It seems so far away, when in essence it is only 8 meters away from you. Then you notice a little glimpse of orange coming in from the sides. Your eyes adjust more and more, the cold purple and warm orange mix together to give you the perfect mixture. And this is when it hits you: it is twilight! This is one of the calmest places I have ever been into my life! What I did was sit down on the floor, put on Clint Mansell’s “Stay With Me” track and let myself immerse in the shimmering glow of what turned out to be nothing more than 3 neon light bulbs in the far distance.

3 neon light bulbs.

That’s it. That’s the whole piece of art. Yet somehow, it was the most powerful in the whole museum. In combination with Clint Mansell’s Stay With Me it gave me the greatest feeling of peace and calm that I’ve experienced in months. Ever since I saw this piece, I’ve returned to the museum a couple of times just to be in this room again. I paid 4 Euros just to sit on the floor in a dark room with 3 neon light bulbs, but my GOD the feeling was incredible.

I fell in love with this so much that I’m planning to make a copy of this whenever I am rich enough to buy a house. Peace. Calm. Quiet. A place where you can let go of everything. A place where you can truly be YOU. There’s no one else around – just twilight, you and your thoughts. And that is something one doesn’t find too often anymore.

I urge you to visit, you won’t regret it.
