One of my favourite things to do when I have some time to kill is going gnome hunting. Weapon of choice? My Holga 135 BC. Gnome hunting, you ask? Why yes. Graffiti gnomes, that is.
All around Utrecht, you can find these spray-painted gnomes, locally known as De Utrechtse Kabouter. Somewhere around 2000, the gnomes started appearing everywhere around the city. The artist responsible for the gnomes has been called as the “Utrecht Keith Haring” by Dutch news show, Eén Vandaag.
Once you start noticing the little creatures with their pointy hats, you start seeing them everywhere. The gnomes are most likely to be found near train tracks.
Or on dilapidated buildings.
But the best spot to go gnome hunting, is the bicycle tunnel at Westplein. The entire tunnel is covered in graffiti and also features a lot of gnomes. I usually go there once every few weeks to see if a new one has popped up.
